![]() We are not born with habits; we acquire them over time. They are formed after we repeat actions often enough for them to become involuntary. This causes many people to say that habits work at a level of awareness that is more subconscious than conscious. That's why we often do not even realize when we are displaying a habit, nor do we typically know we even have a habit until someone or something helps us to see what we are doing. The good thing is that many of our habits are beneficial. They are there to keep us safe, and to protect the evironment and our health. Looking both ways before crossing the street and drying your hands before using electrical appliances are good "safety" habits to have. Turning lights off when you leave a room and turning the water off when you brush your teeh are good "environmental" habits to have. Taking prescribed medications as ordered by your personal care physician and exercising every day at a certain time are good "healthy" habits to have. When our habits are truly ingrained in our everyday lives, we do them without thinking about them. This is great when our habits benefit us in some way. But when our habits have a negative impact on us, we need to explore what the habit is, why we have the habit, and what we will do to change the habit from a having a negative impact to having a positive impact. If we don't, we will suffer the consequences. Read more free articles -> |
